Single-family home.

A single-family home is a separate dwelling in which only members of a single family live. This is in contrast to apartment complexes, condominium s, semi-detached/duplexes , or terrace house/terrace houses in which several families live in the same structure.

Single-family homes are found mostly in suburb s, exurb s, and in rural areas. Large, inner city neighborhoods are so densely populated that there is generally not room for houses devoted to just a single family. Among the wealthy industralized nations, single family homes are most common in the United States , Australia , Canada and New Zealand .

In the United Kingdom the term single-family home is not used. A "single-family home" in the U.S. meaning is called a detached house. The contrast between single-family homes/detached houses and multiple-family homes in the U.S. sense is not made or regarded as important. Instead the main division is between houses (detached, semi-detached or terraced) and flats (i.e. apartments in U.S. English).
